PREVIEW: The Top Teams in the Heart to Meet Down South

DES MOINES, IOWA — The Grand View University football team will have its' first true road test of the season relatively early on. The recently ranked No. 4  Vikings will travel south to Atchinson, KS, to face a 2-0 and 12th-ranked Benedictine College on September 14th at 1:00 p.m.

  THE OPENING KICKOFF
  • Grand View football is entering its tenth season as a Heart of America Athletic Conference member.
  • The Vikings boast an impressive 51-0 regular season win streak, with Joe Woodley sitting at 50 straight regular season wins as the head coach.
  • The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) released the First Official Coaches Top 25 poll; the Vikings moved up one from the preseason poll and currently sit at 4th in the Nation.
  • The Heart of America Athletic Conference announced on September 9th that the game between No. 4 Grand View and No. 12 Benedictine would be the Heart Game of the Week.
  • The Vikings currently sit atop of the Heart in a few categories, with yet a game short of most in the league, rushing yards per game (275 – 1st in HOA, 5th in the NAIA), Punt Returns (6-117 1st in the HOA, 2nd in the NAIA), Field Goal %/PAT % (100%, 1st in the HOA, 1st in the NAIA), Time of Possession PG (37:46 1st in the HOA, 1st in the NAIA).
   INSIDE THE SERIES
  • Grand View controls the series over the Ravens, 6-2.
  • The Vikings are 4-0 in Atchinson, with the last away game back in 2021.
  • In their previous meeting, Grand View narrowly defeated Benedictine 44-42. As time expired, Nathan Hamilton secured the win with a school record-breaking 52-yard field goal.
  • Both programs were projected to win their respective H-N/H-S divisions. 
 DIALED UP DEFENSE
  • Grand View's defense picked up where they left off last season, statistically speaking, forcing the Owls into -40.0 rushing yards and allowing just six points.
  • Jackson Filer made his presence known against William Woods, recording five solos, 3.5 sacks, 4.5 TFLs, and a safety due to back-to-back sacks.
  • Filer leads the country in total sack yards (36), a statistic held by former Viking All-American and Cliff Harris Award Winner Tristin Waugh the previous season. 
  • John Argo recorded a 34-yard pick-six for the first time in his career.  
RAVEN QUICK HITTERS
  • The Ravens sit at 2-0 under head coach Joel Osborn, who is entering his third full season.
  • Benedictine started the 2024 season at 2-0, defeating No. 14 Morningside on the road and William Penn at home. 
  • BC averages 46.5 ppg and is allowing 36 ppg.
  • The Ravens defeated previously ranked No. 10 (Currently ranked No. 14 in the latest Coaches Poll) after the Mustangs elected to go for the win while trailing 48-45. Still, the Ravens held Morningside at the 1-yard line as time expired, resulting in the road upset.
  • The Ravens lead the Nation and the Heart in interceptions (8) and defensive TDs (3).
