SIOUX CENTER, IOWA – In the first of a double header this weekend in the Pizza Ranch Classic, Men's Soccer left it late and scored with 45 seconds left on the clock to defeat Dordt University, 1-0.
Following a defeat to Midland on Wednesday, the Vikings had the opportunity to right their wrongs and bounce back in non-conference play. In early proceedings, the Vikings controlled possession but struggled to develop this into attacks in the final third. In return, Dordt played a more direct style of play that allowed them to win set pieces and cause threats aerially. Luckily, this year's Vikings' defense is much taller than previous years, with
Paulo Marques,
Charlie Wells,
Martin Launay,
and
Daniel Sandoval all defending excellently. Again,
Scott Pengelly made crucial stops to keep the score goalless going into the half.
In the 2
nd half, it was much of the same story. In the 56
th minute,
Pengelly made an outstanding save following a cross into the box, which was one of many combative actions by the Vikings' defense. After this point, the game became scrappy with many fouls, resulting in 4 yellow cards for each side. With the clock ticking down,
Marco Kramer picked the ball up in midfield and drove at the Dordt defense before sliding the ball through to
Warren Sung, who slotted the ball home with just 45 seconds left on the clock. With the Vikings' bench erupting, the game was closed out with class and composure, resulting in a 1-0 victory for the Vikings.
