Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Vikings Fall Short in Des Moines Rivalry Game

DES MOINES, IOWA – Men's Soccer opened their 2024 season with a match-up against Des Moines Rivals, Drake Bulldogs. Despite the game being tied 0-0 at half-time, the Vikings' resilience was overcome by Drake, with a final score of 3-0.

How It Happened
The first few minutes of the game set the tone for what would be a defensive strategy from the Vikings, which allowed the Bulldogs much of the possession for the entire game. The Bulldogs threatened in wide areas, creating chances that called Emiliano Laguna into action on several occasions, pulling off multiple outstanding saves. In the 21st minute, the Vikings countered with the pace of Jaren Obia, following a Felipe Augusto through ball. The Bulldogs goalkeeper denied Obia in a move that emulated the Vikings' winning goal in the spring matchup between these two teams. The score at halftime would remain 0-0. However, the Bulldogs came out with more intensity and momentum, which resulted in a penalty being awarded and converted in the 54th minute. This momentum continued, with the Bulldogs adding a quickfire double in the 63rd minute to make it 3-0. The Vikings were still showing fighting spirit, as Marco Kramer's effort hit the crossbar in the 79th minute, but ultimately, the opening night match-up would end 3-0 Bulldogs.
