CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – Grand View University men's volleyball set their sights on Saint Xavier (IL) for their second pool play match, with the opportunity to extend their stay on the line. The Vikings struggled to find offensive and defensive flow, resulting in a season-ending loss. The Cougars took the match with set scores of 25-17, 25-15, and 25-20.
The match started with the Cougars taking an early lead, thanks to their capitalization on Viking errors. This led to a score of 8-2 in their favor. Despite the Vikings' efforts to keep the set close, the Cougars' well-executed runs proved too much, resulting in a first-set loss for the Vikings, 25-17.
The teams traded points in the second set. Grand View, however, couldn't grasp a lead throughout the set. The Cougars controlled a lead of 17-13, which discouraged the Vikings and led to a 2-0 set lead for Saint Xavier after clinching the second set, 25-15.
Grand View would put forth a fight in the third set, taking their first lead of the entire match in the early goings. The Cougars, however, would be relentless on the defensive side, keeping possessions alive until they took back over the lead following the 10
th point. SXU would force Grand View into their first timeout of the set after they made a break towards match point, leading 23-18. A service error by the Cougars would spare the Vikings time and set them up for a kill by
Leonardo Annichini to make the score 24-20. Grand View, however, would commit a service error on the following point to secure the sweep for the Cougars, closing out the Vikings season.
The Vikings ended the season with an overall record of 22-8 (14-4 HOA), reaching the National Championship for the fifth consecutive season while adding another conference championship ring to their history books.
