Grand View Softball Weekend Recap

DES MOINES, IA: The Vikings hosted a pair of Heart Conference opponents this weekend with Benedictine College and Central Methodist University coming to town. The Vikings split the series with the Ravens and dropped game one 7-6 before bouncing back with a 8-7 win in game two. Moving into Sunday the Vikings dropped a pair to high ranked Eagles of CMU 4-2 and 2-0.

GAME 1: The Vikings scored some early runs in thanks to some Raven errors, the first being off of a past ball in the 1st inning. And then Olivia Kyes reached on an error in the second inning bringing in the Vikings second run. Allyx Lee would score the next pair of Viking runs in the bottom of the 6th with a 2 run homer before Rachel Anderson hit her own 2 run homer in the bottom of the 7th. The 2 run rally in the bottom of the 7th wouldn't be enough to take back the lead in game 1.

GAME 2: The Vikings would get rolling early as they scored 2 runs in each of the first 4 innings. Aggressive base running was a catalyst early on to score runs as the Vikings picked up two stolen bases and Mackenzie Miester turned a single into a triple off of an error and helped score 2 runs. Jessica Walljasper and Anderson would hit back to back home runs over the left field fence in the bottom of the 4th inning to extend the lead. Madi Huisman would pick up the win with help from Lani Gannon as she entered the game and picked up a save after retiring the final two batters of the game.

GAME 3: Grand View would strike first in game one of their second weekend series with Lee scoring off of a passed ball. Anderson would cap off the inning with a sac bunt scoring the other Viking run of the game. CMU would tie the game up and force extra innings where they would plate two runs in the top of the 8th inning but the Vikings were unable to respond and extend the game. Walljasper threw the complete game and struck out 12 batters.

GAME 4: In the final game of the weekend the defenses were the focal point as both teams would get runners on base but struggled to move them around. Neveah Randall would find her way onto base in the bottom of the second but wouldn't be able to move around the base path. While Lee found her way onto base in the bottom of the 4th by way of a double to the right center gap. Neither of the Vikings hits were able to spark a run as the Vikings fell 4-0.

GAME NOTES:
  • GV moves to 12-8 in Heart play and 28-13 overall
  • Anderson collects 4 RBI's and 2 HR on the weekend
  • GV is tied for 5th place in the Heart Conference regular season race
