Des Moines, IA - The Vikings enter this weekend's series 12-12 in conference play after a series split with Peru State College last week. Grand View is looking for a series win over the Mustangs of Mount Mercy; the Vikings have won the previous five match ups looking to keep that streak alive as they enter the weekend.
Game 1 - Senior Ryan Roby would get the start for the Vikings in game one of the weekend series, he went seven innings, surrendering four runs on five hits and striking out four in his 9th appearance this year. Brock Johnson would lead the Vikings going 2-3 in the lead off spot, and Rinehart and Broekemeier also contributed offensively, driving in two runs each. Despite the Vikings matching Mount Mercy with five hits apiece, they failed to capitalize on the opposition's two errors, concluding game one of the series.
Game 2 - After a wild pitch and two singles the Vikings would find themselves with a lead after three innings. Scoring 5 runs in the second and third innings, with a couple of RBI singles from Nolan Drill and Brook Heinen. However, they were unable to sustain their advantage as the lead was gradually eroded and eventually lost in the following inning, culminating in a 10-5 defeat for the Vikings in game two of the series.
Game 3 - Jason Moist would get the start in game three of the series, giving up just two hits and one run over seven innings, striking out five and walking once. Brook Heinen would be the highlight for the Grand View offense homering to left field in the first inning to go up three early. Schwirtz , Canny, and Heinen would each collect two hits in the victory.
Game 4 - The Viking's offense came alive to start game two of the DH, a double by Brook Heinen brings in Broekemeier and Stalder to push two across early for the Vikings. The Mustangs would take a 4-2 lead after the second but would not hold the lead for long as Brock Rinehart would single to retake the lead 5-4. The Vikings would score in five of six innings at the plate giving their pitchers some run support to close the game out. Logan Smith, Josh Stoll, and Jacob Wolver all contributed to the win to split the series with Mount Mercy.
What's Next - The Vikings look to end their season with a series win over William Penn University. The Viking bats showed some life looking to keep that going into next weekend's series. Grand View now sits at a tie for 6th place in the conference looking to make another jump in the right direction before the Heart of America Conference Tournament.
