Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Vikings Edged Out by Pioneers

Des Moines, IA – Grand View and MidAmerica Nazarene entered this contest with similar records in the Heart of America Conference, knowing that this could be a key result in their season. Pioneers scored a goal in each half, with the game ending 2-0 to the Pioneers.

On a hot, windy afternoon at Cownie Soccer Complex, from the first whistle, it was clear that the conditions could play a key part in the result of this game. Battling against the wind in the first half, Grand View struggled to get out of their own half on many occasions, and the high-energy midfield of MNU added to this pressure. Despite this, the Vikings managed to break the press with balls over the top of the Pioneers' defense, with Joshua Grosser and Pietro Piacenza causing problems. The MNU goalkeeper remained unchallenged, however, with only 1 shot being produced by the Vikings in the first half. Down the other end, the Pioneers would capitalize in the 32nd minute, as a corner was headed home, making the score 1-0 going into halftime.

Going into the 2nd half, Grand View believed they were not yet out of this contest and hoped that the wind in their favor would work to their advantage. This period saw an improvement from the Vikings, as they created 5 shots, with Charlie Wells and Joshua Grosser hitting the target. As the Vikings chased the equalizer, it was MNU who would end up doubling their lead in the 75th minute, as a cross from the right side was converted into the top left corner. With the score at 2-0, Grand View threw everything they had at the goal in the last 15 minutes but just could not convert, and the game would end 2-0 for the Pioneers.
