DES MOINES, IA - The Vikings took on the Graceland Yellow Jackets on a snowy Thursday night for their second matchup of the season. The Yellow Jackets slowly chipped away throughout the game to eventually build up a lead that would hold true until the final buzzer handing the Vikings a loss with a score of 77-63.
Kino Thompson led the way for the Vikings with 10 points on 5-6 shooting from the field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Jacob Koontz and
Jaxson Young both would add early layups to the Vikings score to provide some early offense but the Yellow Jackets would respond quickly with a pair of three point baskets to take a 6-4 lead in the first 2 and a half minutes. The hot start would continue for Yellow jackets as they would hit three more three pointers before finally missing their first of the game. The Vikings defense would not back down though as
Cecil Lee III would take control on a handful of possessions and collect a steal, block, and dunk to help cut the lead back down to 3 points 17-14.
Connor Robertson would get on the action shortly following the media timeout as he splashed in a three. The teams would continue to trade baskets down the stretch before the Yellow Jackets would extend their lead slightly and head into the break with a 19 point lead, 43-24.
The Vikings picked up their first basket of the half as Young cut through the lane and scored a layup. Through the second half the Vikings would put together a few runs but would never be able to cut deep into the Yellow Jackets lead. They were able to get a spark late in the half from some younger players as
Josh Sanderson came into the game connecting on a three and picking up a late assist and rebound.
Ayden Foster would score the Vikings final basket as he scored a layup assisted by Matthew Waters bringing the final score to 77-63 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
