Vikings Protect Their Home Floor, Fought Off Baker in Five

Des Moines, IA - The Vikings finished off a home stretch as they invited Baker University to conclude their week of play. The Vikings would fight off Baker's attempt to end things in four sets, as they would be victorious after forcing a 5th set with scores of 22-25, 25-15, 17-25, 25-19, and 15-12.

Heleine Filipe would have the hot hands for the Vikings as she ended with 17 kills, Brooklyn Roder added 11, and Sydney Beasley finished with 10.

Kylie Hoben would be a force at the net as she tallied 8 blocks, joined by her front line, both Beasley and Filipe with 6.

Jenna Bentz would be the deliverer for the Vikings as she continued to pace her average with 43 total assists. Chevy Wagner-Chun would defend the floor as she closed the weekend with 33 digs.

The first set would allow time for the Vikings to find a rhythm, coming off of a four-set battle against RV MidAmerica the previous evening. The Vikings would tie things up 15 all after trailing all of the first set after a block by Hoben and Roder. A string of kills would favor the Wildcats and they would coast to a set one victory 25-22.

The Vikings would come out matching their efforts in the second set as they did the night previous, the team would jump out to an early 14-5 lead capitalizing off of Wildcat errors. Baker would be forced into a timeout with the set on the line, but the Vikings would keep the pedal down as the set would end with an ace from Sierra Wright

Baker would lead a majority of the 3rd set, and the Vikings would get a late run that would be led by Beasley, but the team wouldn't have enough to make the comeback as Baker would be one set away from a match victory.

Grand View and Baker would trade points early in the 4th set with it on the line. A line of errors from Baker would allow for the Vikings to get footing to take over, a kill from Ellie Dougherty would make things 17-14. A third kill from Dougherty of the set followed by one from Hoben would force a fifth set, 25-19.

The Vikings showed an intensity in the 5th set that would get the Johnson Wellness Center moving. A few long rallies would fall in Bakers' favor, but a block by Hoben and Filipe would be the turning point for the Vikings as they would go up 7-4. Dougherty would put one away as the Wildcats began to gain momentum. Filipe would close the door on their comeback attempt giving the Vikings a perfect 3-0 start in Des Moines.

The Vikings will hit the road before homecoming, they will travel to Cedar Rapids, IA to take on the Mustangs at 7:00 p.m.
