Des Moines, IA - The Vikings were back in action Friday night where they squared off against Mid-America Nazarene in a 4 set matchup. The Vikings got off to a slow start dropping set one before bouncing back and winning three straight. With final scores of 25-27, 25-20,24-26-, and 25-23.Â
The Vikings were led by
Brooklyn Roder who collected 16 kills and closely followed by
Heleine Filipe with 15. Many of those kills were assisted by
Jenna Bentz as she totaled 31 for the match. Â
Sydney Beasley was a force at the net as she collected 7 total blocks throughout the game. And
Clarissa Hasty anchored the defense as she collected 12 digs.Â
The first set opened up with a Mid-America lead before a Roder Kill sparked the offense to go on a 7-0 run with 4 of those points coming from Roder. The remainder of the first set would see multiple large runs before both teams were trading points at the end of the set. The pioneers would sneak out set one with a 27-25 win.Â
The Second set would stay tight in the early goings before a kill from
Vanessa Romo set the tone for the rest of the match. The Vikings would dominate much of the set on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball collecting kills and blocks from a variety of Vikings. The Pioneers would battle back a little bit but
Kylie Hoben would help seal the deal for the Vikings with a let set kill taking the set 25-20.Â
Set three started out with both teams trading points until the Vikings offense came alive and was able to give themselves a little breathing room with a sore of 15-12. The Pioneers would make a push throughout the second half of the set and even took a late lead at 24-23, but the Vikings stood tall and controlled the final three points to take an important 26-24 win.Â
The Vikings were ready to close out the match as
Jenna Bentz opened up the final set with an ace and the Vikings didn't look back. Filiepe played a big role in that as she picked up two early kills as the Vikings jumped out to a 8-3 lead. But the Pioneers were not going away as every time the Vikings created some separation they battled back. After a late GV timeout the team came out ready to finish the game as they won 3/5 final points to win the set 25-23.Â
The Vikings are back in action at home this weekend on Saturday as they take on Baker University starting at 2PM.Â
