The Vikings opened up the game with a hot start and never looked back as they took home a decisive win over conference opponents Baker. The Wildcats would fall to the Vikings 75-60 behind
Cleao Murray's 25 points on 11-19 shooting.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Ella Larsen was a spark for the Vikings early on as she scored 10 points thanks to a perfect 3-3 start from the three point line. As well as leading the Vikings early defensive dominace as she grabbed 3 of the teams five steals and their only block in the opening quarter. The Vikings were able to force 8 early turnovers without committing a foul in the first 10 minutes to help them limit Bakers offense to only 11 points in the early going.
The Vikings offense would struggle as the second quarter started as they would only shoot 26.7% from the field.
Rachel Leerar would make sure to keep the Vikings in it as she would collect 5 points in quarter including one 3 pointer.
Malarie Ross would hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to extend the Vikings lead to 9 before Baker would connect on a last second 3 pointer to send both teams to the locker room with the Vikings ahead 38-32.
The offense would still struggle to find a rhythm as the Vikings returned from halftime but they were again lifted up by their defense who collected 4 steals and forced 8 more turnovers in the 3rd quarter. Grand View did move the ball well as they were able to collect 5 total assist in the quarter despite only having Murray and Larsen score field goals in the quarter. The Vikings would struggle from deep in the 3rd as they only shot 28.6% but gained the momentum of the game back after Murray hit a last second three to give the Vikings back a three point lead.
While Baker would score 5 quick points to take the lead from the Vikings they would respond in dominant fashion as they would go on a 21-0 run through the quarter and not give up another basket until the final 90 seconds of play. Murray would collect 12 of these points on 5-8 shooting while
Katie Fogarty would bring in two major offensive rebounds to help extend the run. She would get in on the scoring as well as she would connect on a deep three. And it would be Ellie Rengstrof that would help close out the game as she would go a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe to seal the deal. As the final buzzer sounded the Vikings not only celebrated a 15 point victory, 75-60, but they celebrated moving to 2-0 in conference play.
