Woodley has spent 26 of his 31 seasons coaching in Iowa: graduate assistant at the University of Iowa, assistant coach at Waterloo East High School, head coach at Osage High School, head coach at St. Ambrose University, and a 9-year assistant coach at Iowa State University. He has spent the past four years as the athletic director and head football coach at Sam Rayburn High School in Houston, Texas.

Coach Woodley is an inductee to the Iowa High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and is a Hall of Fame member of the University of Northern Iowa and Waterloo East High School. He has won coach of the year honors at each school he has coached and was the NAIA District 15 Coach of the Year while at St. Ambrose after his team earned a victory over IAA power Western Illinois.

Woodley's name is synonymous with athletics in the state of Iowa as his four sons are all involved in coaching. Brian is the head football coach at Johnston High School, Joe serves as Grand View's Defensive Coordinator, Matthew is an assistant basketball coach at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, and Andy is an assistant basketball coach at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.

Woodley resides in Urbandale with his wife Betsy.
