OLATHE, KS - Grand View rolled past MidAmerica Nazarene 35-13 on the road in Olathe, scoring on four of their first five possessions and never letting the Pioneers back into the game.
The Vikings came out firing on the opening drive, going 75 yards in 10 plays.
Casey Rooney hit
Rex Woodley for a 26-yard gain to get into MNU territory, and an MNU personal foul set up first and goal at the 4. Rooney finished it himself on a 4-yard touchdown run, and
Cory Wood's extra point made it 7-0. After a Pioneer three-and-out, Grand View struck again.
Bryant Williams broke off an 11-yard run, Rooney found Williams for 10 more through the air, and an MNU pass interference penalty moved the ball to the 23.
Louis Brooks took it the rest of the way on a 23-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 with 4:19 left in the first. MNU answered with a 9-play, 77-yard drive that carried into the second quarter, ending on a 5-yard touchdown pass.
Grand View needed just three plays to answer. Facing third and 5 at their own 34, Rooney hit
Dalten Van Pelt for a 66-yard touchdown to push the lead back to 21-7. The Vikings defense then took over, as
Simeon Reichenbach opened the next MNU drive with a sack. Later in the quarter the Pioneers drove to the Grand View 10, but
Kellen Moore stopped a fourth-down pass for no gain to force a turnover on downs. After an MNU punt, Brooks returned it 13 yards to the MNU 48 with a minute left. Rooney hit
Triston Williams twice for 13 yards each and found Van Pelt for 11 more,
Isaac Kracl ran for 9, and Rooney connected with
Lance Clayburg for a 2-yard touchdown with just 3 seconds left in the half. Wood's kick made it 28-7 at the break.
The defense forced a three-and-out to open the second half, with
Drew Gerdes making back-to-back stops. Grand View followed with an 11-play, 65-yard drive that ate up 5:24. Rooney converted two third downs, hitting Van Pelt for 12 on third and 11 and Clayburg for 19 on third and 8. Clayburg capped it with a 4-yard touchdown run to make it 35-7. MNU put together a 16-play, 79-yard drive that ended in a 2-yard touchdown pass with 7 seconds left in the third, but
Porter Doggett and the Viking defense stopped the two-point try.
Grand View's defense closed the door in the fourth quarter. MNU took over at the Grand View 49, but
Kenyi James dropped a receiver for a 3-yard loss on third down and the Pioneers turned it over on downs. MNU's next drive reached the Grand View 41 before
Leo Jones pressured MNU into an incompletion on fourth and 8. Kracl then carried the ball six straight times, including a 6-yard run on fourth and 3, to run out the clock.
