Vikings Fall in Straight Sets to Dordt University (IA)

BELLEVUE, NE – Grand View couldn't slow down Dordt (IA) on Friday, dropping a straight-set decision, 25-16, 25-22, 25-20, at BU Arena.
Dordt University (IA) improves to 6-1 on the season, while Grand View falls to 2-2.

Set 1
The set was tied at 1-1 before Dordt took over, reeling off nine straight points, a mix of kills and Grand View miscues to surge ahead 10-1. Grand View called timeout in the middle of the run, at 6-1, but couldn't slow Dordt down.
Grand View settled in from there, getting kills from Brooklyn Roder, Jocelyn Barrett and Maria Eduarda dos Passos, along with blocks from Ana Julia Goncalves, Barrett and Roder, Victoria Gasparini, to chip away at the deficit. The Vikings got as close as six points on a few occasions (13-7, 16-10) but never closer, and Dordt closed out the set 25-16.

Set 2
The second set was the tightest of the match, with the two teams trading points throughout the opening stretch and Grand View grabbing an early edge. Kills from Luisa de Paula, Delaney Roberts and Victoria Gasparini, plus a block from Lindsey Hrbek and Ana Julia Goncalves, built a 6-10 Vikings lead and forced a Dordt timeout.
Dordt answered out of the timeout, working the score even at 14-14 before ripping off five straight points capped by a run of Grand View hitting errors to turn a 11-14 deficit into a 16-14 lead. Grand View called its own timeout to stop the bleeding, and the Vikings kept clawing back, twice pulling within one point (16-15 and 21-20) on a Victoria Gasparini kill and a Victoria Bencardino ace.
Grand View forced one more Dordt timeout down 20-23, and Maria Eduarda dos Passos had a kill and forced a Dordt attack error to pull within three at 24-22, but a Grand View service error handed Dordt the set, 25-22.

Set 3
Dordt jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Grand View answered with a run of its own, scoring five straight, a Maria Eduarda dos Passos kill, a block from Lindsey Hrbek/Luisa de Paula, a Dordt ball-handling error and a Victoria Gasparini ace to tie the set at 5.
From there the set turned into a back-and-forth battle, with the score level eleven different times (5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18) and neither team pulling away. Grand View briefly grabbed its only lead of the set at 9-10 on an Ana Julia Goncalves kill, and Goncalves, Maria Eduarda dos Passos and Lindsey Hrbek kept trading points with Dordt all the way to an 18-18 tie.
Dordt finally pulled away from a 22-20 edge, closing the match on three straight points to finish off the sweep, 25-20.
