Game 1: Clarke Pulls Away Late
Grand View kept things competitive for most of Saturday's opener, putting up nine hits and trading leads through six innings. Tyler Lewnau was the offensive standout, going a perfect 3 for 3 with a triple and an RBI from the seven hole. Colin Driscoll and Jaden Drill each chipped in a hit and an RBI as well.
Devin Doyle gave Grand View a solid five innings on the mound, striking out seven, before Clarke broke things open in the sixth with a five run inning to put the game out of reach.
Game 2: Vikings Bounce Back Strong
Grand View responded in Game 2 with an 8 to 4 victory, and it was a complete team effort. Driscoll was the catalyst with a homer in the fourth, two doubles, and consistent on base production all afternoon. Ben Sandvig went 3 for 4 with two RBI and Thomas Maathuis drove in three from the seven spot, making it a big day for the middle to bottom of the order.
Jalen Vorpahl earned the win in relief, going 5 innings with seven strikeouts and just one earned run allowed. Grand View put up four runs in the seventh to seal it, with Maathuis and Sandvig delivering the key hits.
Game 3: Vikings Rally Falls Just Short
Game 3 was one of the more exciting games of the season. Grand View trailed big but rallied for seven runs in the sixth inning as Barber singled in two, Bergkamp walked in a run, Tanamor singled in one, Drill hit a sac fly, and Driscoll capped it with a two run homer to center to pull within one. Ultimately Clarke held on 11 to 10, but the Vikings' resilience was on full display.
Bergkamp, Barber, and Tanamor each went 3 for the day, and Drill drove in four runs. Grand View finished with 12 hits and three stolen bases, plenty of production in a game that just didn't go their way.
Game 4: Drill Puts on a Show in a Tough Loss
Jaden Drill was the story of Game 4 with a homer in the fifth that put Grand View up 6 to 5, three hits, and four RBI in a 3 for 4 afternoon. Bergkamp, Driscoll, and Tanamor each added multiple hits, and Grand View ran wild on the bases with four stolen bases including three by Sandvig.
Despite out hitting Clarke 12 to eight, Grand View fell 8 to 7 in a tight one. The Vikings showed plenty of fight, but Clarke's timely hitting made the difference late.
Series Takeaway
Grand View split the series 2 to 2, with some bright individual performances throughout. Driscoll and Drill were consistent offensive forces all four games, and the Vikings' speed on the basepaths, racking up stolen bases in three of the four games, remains one of their most potent weapons. Vorpahl's strong outing in Game 2 was a pitching highlight for the weekend.
