NORWALK, IA – Grand View Softball defended its home designation in Norwalk on Sunday, grinding out a pair of victories against the Ottawa (Kan.) Braves. The Vikings controlled Game 1 behind strong pitching and a decisive third inning, before battling through a tense pitcher's duel in Game 2 that required extra innings to decide. Grand View ultimately secured the sweep with a 6–1 win in the opener and a dramatic 2–1 walk-off victory in eight innings.
GAME 1 | GRAND VIEW 6, OTTAWA (KAN.) 1
Grand View opened the afternoon with strong pitching from
Madeline Waldorf, who set the tone early by striking out two batters in a scoreless first inning despite Ottawa placing a runner at third.
The Vikings quickly capitalized in the bottom half.
Elle Nelsen worked a walk, and
Gabriella Taber reached on a Braves error, allowing Nelsen to score the game's first run. Moments later,
Alexia Jarrett lifted a ball down the right field line that brought Taber home to give Grand View an early 2–0 advantage.
Ottawa responded in the third inning with a run on a two-out RBI single from Brookelynn Becker, trimming the deficit to 2–1. However, the Vikings wasted little time regaining momentum.
Grace Anderson sparked the bottom of the third with a bunt single and stole second to move into scoring position. After two quick outs, Jarrett reached on an Ottawa error that allowed Anderson to score.
Reese Cooley followed with a single to center field to plate another run, and
Nevaeh Randall kept the rally alive by reaching on a Braves miscue that brought Cooley around.
Chloe Kottlowski capped the four-run frame with an RBI single to right field, extending the Viking lead to 6–1.
From there, Grand View relied on its pitching staff to close the door. Waldorf worked 4.1 innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six.
Molly Breeding entered in relief and shut down the Braves over the final 2.2 innings, striking out three and allowing no runs to secure the victory.
Despite recording only four hits, the Vikings capitalized on Ottawa's defensive miscues and patient at-bats to build the comfortable margin.
GAME 2 | GRAND VIEW 2, OTTAWA (KAN.) 1 (8 INNINGS)
The second game turned into a tight defensive battle, with both teams struggling to find offense early.
Neither side recorded a run through the first three innings before Ottawa broke the stalemate in the fourth when Brookelynn Becker launched a solo home run to give the Braves a 1–0 lead.
Grand View pitchers
Macy Blomgren and
Claire Leinen kept the deficit manageable. Blomgren tossed four innings while allowing just two hits and striking out three, and Leinen followed with two scoreless innings to keep the Vikings within striking distance.
The breakthrough finally came in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs,
Reese Cooley doubled to keep the inning alive.
Nevaeh Randall delivered in the clutch, singling to score Cooley and tie the game at 1–1, sending the contest to extra innings.
In the eighth,
Addison Halstead entered the circle and worked around the international tiebreaker runner to keep Ottawa off the board.
Grand View then executed in the bottom half.
Peyton Naranjo began the inning at second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Grace Anderson. With one out,
Elle Nelsen came through with the decisive swing, lining a single through the left side to score Naranjo and give the Vikings the 2–1 walk-off victory.
Halstead earned the win after two scoreless innings of relief, sealing the sweep for Grand View.
