DES MOINES, IA – Grand View Softball protected home turf in dominant fashion, sweeping a doubleheader against the Graceland Yellowjackets behind a combination of lights-out pitching, timely hitting, and standout defensive plays. The Vikings controlled Game 1 from the start and carried that momentum into a run-rule victory in Game 2.
GAME 1 | GRAND VIEW 6, GRACELAND 0
Grand View wasted no time setting the tone in the opener, striking early and never looking back behind a commanding performance in the circle.
In the bottom of the first,
Grace Anderson got things rolling, coming around to score on an RBI single up the middle from
Elle Nelsen. Moments later,
Nevaeh Randall delivered the big swing of the inning, launching a two-run home run to give the Vikings a quick 3-0 advantage.
The offense added on in the third when Nelsen reached and later scored on an RBI groundout from Randall, extending the lead to 4-0.
While the bats provided steady support, the story of the game was the dominant pitching.
Madeline Waldorf controlled the game from the start, racking up strikeouts and keeping the Yellowjackets off balance. She tossed five shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out 10.
Defensively, the Vikings backed her up with key plays, none bigger than a highlight-reel moment in the sixth inning. With two outs,
Grace Anderson made a fully extended diving catch in right-center field to rob a hit and end the inning, preserving the shutout and energizing the home crowd.
Grand View added insurance in the fifth inning, capitalizing on a Graceland error that allowed
Chloe Kottlowski to score, followed by an RBI double down the left field line from Randall to make it 6-0.
Molly Breeding came in to close things out, tossing two scoreless innings and striking out four to secure the shutout victory.
Randall led the offense, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, and four RBIs, while Nelsen added two hits and a pair of runs scored.
GAME 2 | GRAND VIEW 8, GRACELAND 0 (5 INNINGS)
The Vikings carried their momentum into Game 2, using a big middle inning surge to secure a run-rule win.
After a quiet start, Grand View broke through in the third inning.
Chloe Kottlowski came around to score on an RBI single from Randall, before
Gabriella Taber delivered a clutch two-RBI double to stretch the lead to 3-0.
The floodgates opened in the fourth. With runners on,
Elle Nelsen crushed a grand slam to center field, plating four runs and blowing the game open at 7-0.
Grand View added one more in the fifth, as
Lark Drake drove in
Makenna Foster with a single up the middle to cap the scoring at 8-0.
In the circle,
Claire Leinen was dominant, tossing four innings of one-hit softball while striking out three. She faced just 14 batters and kept the Yellowjackets from ever finding a rhythm at the plate.
Macy Blomgren closed the door in the fifth, striking out two to complete the combined shutout.
Nelsen led the way offensively with four RBIs on her grand slam, while Taber added two RBIs and Randall chipped in another. The Vikings totaled nine hits in the game and showed discipline at the plate, drawing four walks.
