Grand View Outlasts Missouri Valley in Double Overtime, Securing the 97-92 W

MARSHALL, MISSOURI – The Grand View men's basketball team defeated Missouri Valley 97-92 in double overtime on Friday night, surviving an epic battle to improve to 11-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play. 

Missouri Valley jumped out to an early lead in the first half. The home team scored the first seven points before Daviyon Gaston hit a three-pointer assisted by Lukas Helms to make it 7-3. Gaston added another three-pointer assisted by Patrick Worrell to cut it to 9-6, but Missouri Valley extended their lead to 12-6. Helms scored to make it 12-8. After back-and-forth scoring, Ogrodnik hit a free throw and a three-pointer assisted by Helms followed by a Gaston fastbreak layup to give the Vikings their first lead at 21-20. Joe Knutson hit two free throws to give Grand View a 23-22 lead, but the home team answered with an 8-3 run. Rodell Davis Jr. hit a three-pointer assisted by Gaston to cut it to 32-29, but Missouri Valley held a 36-29 halftime lead. 

Grand View came out strong in the second half. Gaston hit a three-pointer assisted by Helms to cut the deficit to 36-32 and scored again to tie the game at 38-38. Young scored twice to give the Vikings a 42-38 lead, and Gaston added a layup and free throw to extend it to 45-38. Helms threw down a dunk on a fast break assisted by Gaston to push the advantage to 47-38, its largest lead of the game. Young added another layup to make it 49-40, but Missouri Valley rallied. Helms hit a three-pointer assisted by Gaston to extend the lead to 52-47, and Young scored to make it 54-50. Knutson hit a free throw to push it to 55-50, but the home team continued to fight back. Young scored assisted by Knutson to give Grand View a 57-54 lead, but Missouri Valley tied the game at 57-57. Knutson hit a dunk assisted by Young and added a free throw to knot the score at 61-61. Knutson scored again assisted by Gaston to give the Vikings a 63-62 lead, but Missouri Valley answered. Knutson added a layup and free throw to tie the game at 66-66. Young hit a clutch three-pointer assisted by Gaston to give Grand View a 69-66 lead with 1:34 remaining. Missouri Valley fought back as Helms hit two free throws to make it 71-68, but the home team hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 71-71 and force overtime. 

In the first overtime, Young hit a jumper to give Grand View a 73-71 lead, and converted two free throws to extend it to 75-73. Missouri Valley tied the game at 75-75, but O'Shawn Jones-Winslow scored assisted by Young to give the Vikings a 77-76 advantage. Helms added a layup to make it 79-77, but the home team tied it at 79-79. Worrell hit two free throws to give Grand View an 81-79 lead, but Missouri Valley scored to tie the game at 81-81 and force a second overtime. 

In the second overtime, Jones-Winslow scored assisted by Young to give the Vikings an 83-81 lead. Jones-Winslow hit two free throws to extend it to 85-83, and Helms added a jumper to make it 87-85. Jones-Winslow converted another free throw to push the lead to 88-85, and Helms hit two more free throws to extend it to 90-85. Young scored and hit a free throw to make it 93-87, but Missouri Valley fought back. Gaston hit two free throws in the final seconds to give Grand View a 97-92 lead and seal the double overtime victory. 

GAME NOTES:  

  • Jaxson Young recorded with 22 points on 8-of-18 shooting and added 4 rebounds and 4 assists. 

  • Lukas Helms contributed 22 points on 6-of-13 shooting, going 9-of-11 from the free-throw line, and added four assists and 5 rebounds. 

  • Daviyon Gaston added 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, hitting 3-of-7 three-pointers, and pulled down 11 rebounds with 7 assists. 

  • Grand View forced 18 turnovers. 

  • Grand View improved to 11-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
