UPLAND, IN — The Grand View Vikings pulled off a dramatic 7-6 walk-off victory over the Bellevue Bruins, capped by Brook Heinen's clutch RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
Grand View started Jason Moist on the mound today, and after a leadoff triple settled in with 3 quick outs and notching 2 strikeouts. After a Dane Schwartz single, the Vikings weren't able to get anyone else on base, ending the first inning scoreless.
The Bruins threatened to score in the second with runners on base, but great defensive plays by Carson Wadel and Dane Schwartz got the Vikings through the inning unscathed. The top of the third saw Bellevue breakthrough, after back-to-back hits and a single that brought the first run of the game in. The Bruins threatened to add more, but great plays by Erik Broekemeier and Brock Rinehart ended the inning to stay down 1-0.
A two run fourth inning brought the Bruins lead to 3-0, but the Vikings wasted no time responding. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, a clutch two-RBI single by Erik Broekemeier cut the deficit to 3-2.
Momentum shifted in the 6th after a Hank Himrich's solo blast to tie the game 3-3. After a pair of singles and a fielder's choice out, Brock Johnson ripped a three-run homer over the right-center fence giving the Vikings their first lead of the game with a score of 6-3.
Bellevue fought back in the seventh, managing to load the bases with no outs. The Bruins managed to plate three runs. In relief, Noah Kueter closed the inning with a huge strikeout, stranding the go-ahead run.
The eighth inning saw the Bruins and Vikings bullpens trading blows with Jacob Wolver on the mound. In the top of the ninth, Evan Borst came in to keep the game knotted at 6-6. A great throw by catcher Brock Rinehart caught a runner stealing, ending the inning and heading into the bottom of the ninth giving the vikings a walk-off opportunity.
After a quick out to start the bottom of the ninth, Rinehart picked up a walk and was replaced by Connor Canny at first base. A single by Hank Himrich moved Connor to second, and into scoring position. Brook Heinen delivered under pressure, lining a base hit to right-center field and scoring Connor Canny, securing a walk-off win for the Vikings.
