DES MOINES, IOWA Grand View took on St. Ambrose in this mid-week matchup. The schools played in a one, nine inning affair. The Vikings domination on the mound, paired with a couple breakout innings on offense, resulted in a 15-2 home win at Lou Yacinich Stadium.
WEDNESDAY GAME
The Vikings started Logan Smith in today's meeting against the Bees. Smith was hot early, with four strikeouts in the six straight batters retired to start the game. Smith let up the first run for the visitors, in the third inning and that was all the Bees' had for the righty. Smith went two more innings of no run baseball and finished with just four hits let up through five strong innings pitched.
The Vikings catcher, Brock Rinehart, sent a missile in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead in the first. After nothing going in the second, GV started to see the ball well in inning number three. Evan Borst launched one into left center field, for a three RBI home run that started with a single from Rinehart. Later in the inning, Brock Johnson lifted a ball to a gap in center and got the wheels moving. Johnson slid into third with a two RBI triple to extend the lead to five runs.
The Viking's Noah Schlup came into relief at the top of the sixth inning. Schlup earned three strikeouts in the three innings pitched and gave up just one run that occurred in the top of the eighth. Schlup was backed up by the bats of GV which came in the sixth. Grand View had RBIs from Brook Heinen and Carson Wadel early in the inning. Bryce Stalder followed this with a double down the left field line which brought in two more runs and two runners sitting in scoring position. Johnson found another extra base hit with an RBI double to center field. Rinehart found a gap through the 4-3 gap on a hard ground ball which resulted in an RBI single. Borst found another gap in the left side of the infield and brought in Stalder from third. Tyler Lewnau came in to pinch hit at the end of the inning and with two outs, delivered an RBI double to put the Vikings up 15-1.
Grand View brought in Evan Borst to pitch the closing inning of the afternoon and commanded the plate with his fast ball. Borst delivered two strikeouts that blew past the batter, along with a groundout to second. Borst went three up, three down, to finalize the Vikings 13th win in a row.
