GV Football Dominates on Senior Day

DES MOINES, IOWA – The Vikings hosted Culver-Stockton for their week 9 matchup at home. Grand View improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play with a dominant 62-7 victory over the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings also recognized their seniors that have made an impact on the Grand View program. Grand View thanks every senior for the dedication to the team.

The game started with Grand View receiving the opening kickoff. After a quick three-and-out to start, the Vikings' defense set the tone early. Back-to-back offside penalties gave Culver-Stockton some momentum, but the Grand View defense held strong. Jackson Filer recorded a crucial sack on third down, forcing a Wildcat punt.

Grand View found their rhythm on the next possession. Bryant Williams got things going on the ground with a 4-yard carry before Jackson Waring connected with Corey Phillips for 16 yards. Facing a crucial 4th and 1 at the Culver-Stockton 32, Dalten Van Pelt converted with a 2-yard pickup. Van Pelt followed with a 10-yard run to set up first and goal. Waring found Lance Clayburg in the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown strike. Cory Wood's extra point was good, and the Vikings led 7-0.

The defense forced another three-and-out, and the offense went right back to work. Van Pelt was the workhorse on this drive with back-to-back runs of 12 and 8 yards. Waring then connected with Clayburg again, this time for 39 yards and another touchdown. The Vikings extended their lead to 14-0 late in the first quarter.

Culver-Stockton showed some fight early in the second quarter, putting together a 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to cut the deficit to 14-7. The drive was aided by a Grand View pass interference penalty in the red zone.

Grand View responded immediately. After a big kickoff return by Jordan Kumm to midfield, the Vikings needed just seven plays to find the end zone. A pass interference call on 4th down kept the drive alive, and Waring hit Clayburg for his third touchdown reception of the day, this time from 8 yards out. The Vikings led 21-7.

The defense continued to apply pressure, and Jackson Filer came up with another sack. Grand View added another score before halftime when Waring kept it himself for a 2-yard touchdown run. Bryant Williams had an 18-yard run to set up the score, and the Vikings took a commanding 28-7 lead into the break.

The second half was all Grand View. On the opening drive of the third quarter, the Vikings went 99 yards in just three plays. After Tucker Dickherber intercepted a pass at the 1-yard line, Van Pelt got the Vikings breathing room with a 10-yard run. Waring then scrambled for 13 yards before finding Aisea Toki for a 76-yard touchdown bomb. The score made it 35-7.

Grand View's defense continued to dominate. Cade Sheedy recorded a sack, and the Vikings forced another punt. Late in the third quarter, Bryant Williams broke free for a 39-yard run, and Ethan Schultz capped the drive with a 12-yard touchdown run as time expired in the quarter. The Vikings led 42-7 heading into the final frame.

The fourth quarter saw Grand View's depth shine. Corin Greenwell picked off a pass early in the quarter, giving the Vikings excellent field position. Isaac Kracl punched in a 1-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 48-7. Wood's extra point attempt was fumbled, but the damage was done.

After a forced fumble on the kickoff return, recovered by Greenwell, the Vikings were back in business. On Senior Day, Sawyer Wardlow got his opportunity under center and delivered a perfect 41-yard touchdown strike to fellow senior Harrison Rosenberg. The sideline erupted in celebration for the two seniors, and Wood converted the extra point, making it 55-7.

Grand View added one more score for good measure. Wardlow finished the drive himself with an 8-yard touchdown run. Wood's kick was good, and the Vikings completed the dominant performance with a 62-7 victory.

The Vikings' balanced attack was on full display, totaling 549 yards of offense (337 rushing, 212 passing) while holding Culver-Stockton to just 176 total yards. Seven different Vikings found the end zone, showcasing the team's incredible depth.
