DES MOINES, IOWA – Your No. 1 ranked Grand View Wrestling team kicked off their dual season with an impressive 54-0 victory over Baker. The Vikings didn't drop a match and accumulated bonus points in every match.
GV started with Kaden Weber who received a forfeit, followed by No. 3 Gabe Gonzales. Gabe took care of business with great attacks on his feet, and after giving up a take down, Gabe finished the match with a fall. Reese Courtney put more work in top, adding points up quickly. Courtney earned a tech fall before the end of the second period, getting his first dual win in a GV singlet. No. 1 ranked Eli Larsen defeated the highest-ranked Baker opponent of the night. Larsen found a couple clean attacks and some near fall to get a major decision over No. 10 Nikolas Slatoff.
Khyler Carstarphen kept his foot on the gas during his match and got a huge roar from the crowd as he finished the match with a tech fall, seconds before the 7 minutes expired. An electric 21-6 win for the 157-pound senior.
No. 1 Cam Robinson had about as much action as you can for wrestling 1:30. Robinson was taken down first but quickly escaped and found a take down of his own. Another take down was given up by Cam, but then he put on a performance. Cam hit a standing Granby followed by a super duck shortly after. This had the crowd up on their feet, and Cam was smiling every second. The defending champ finished the match with a fall on the edge of the mat.
No. 1 Kris Ketchum wrestled his first dual as a Viking, after being awarded the wrestler of the week in the Heart of America. Kris earned a fall just 2 minutes into the match, not leaving any doubts.
Lucas Hageman accepted another open weight at 184 pounds, and No. 1 ranked Garavous Kouekabakilaho was up next. GK put on a clinic at the neutral position, earning a 21-6 tech fall. GK's under-hook series showed, along with great head and hands defense.
No. 15 Shane Cook finished the night at 285 with the same score. Cook finished on every snatch single he shot, and put together an even faster TF, only 2:19 into the match. Cook's celebration toward the bench was the last of the night, and the Vikings secured a 54-0 victory on their home dual opener.
