OSKALOOSA, IOWA – The Vikings traveled to William Penn Saturday, for their week 5 matchup. This was the Rock & Ladder Trophy game, and the Heart Clash of the Week. The No. 1 Grand View Vikings would play the No. 20 Statesmen at 2:00 PM.
GV started the game with a beautiful, 11-play drive. Jackson Waring completed quick hitters throughout the drive to Triston Williams, Jordan Kumm, and Corey Phillips. The run was also spread out between Waring and running backs Dalten Van Pelt and Ethan Schultz. Waring finished the drive with a short, 3-yard completion to Lance Clayburg, for the first score of the game.
The defense was ready to play as well, as the Vikings forced a turnover on the first possession for the Statesmen. GV punched a ball out on the WPU quarterback, and Cameron Meislah found the recovery inside the GV 20.
The Vikings offense did much of the same in the next drive. A ton of different looks in the run game, keeping the defense on their heels. Ja'Quez Hall had an 11-yard rush, along with Isaac Kracl and Bryant Williams getting in the mix. Aisea Toki also found a first-down carry later in the drive. The second 11-play drive ended in the same way. Waring connected with Clayburg for the second time, but this one for a 20-yard touchdown reception. 14-0 the score.
The second quarter started a bit slower, with both defenses getting stops. Grand View gave up its first points of the game on a special teams play by the Statesmen. The Vikings' punt was blocked into the end zone, and a safety was awarded to William Penn.
Grand View made a stop on the next drive and, with a short field, was stopped after a first down. This was enough for a 46-yard field goal that Cory Wood cashed in.
GVU's defense continued to dominate, and the pressure forced an errant throw from Ramsey, and Kellen Moore took it the other way. Moore added another interception this week and a 24-yard return on the end of the play.
The next Viking drive, off the takeaway, was stopped near the same mark, and Cory Wood drained a 45-yarder. This put things at 20-2, and that's where the half would end.
The Vikings received the ball in the second half and went straight down the field. Van Pelt got the offense going with a rush and a five-yard reception. Waring found his legs, popping off two different 10-yard runs. Waring connected with Jordan Kumm to end the drive on a 12-yard touchdown pass.
Grand View's defense forced a three-and-out with two tackles from John Argo.
Bryant Williams and Triston Williams received passes on the next drive, and Schultz was at work on the ground. The seventh play of the drive was Waring finding the end zone on an 11-yard touchdown run. The Vikings were up 34-2.
The Vikings rinsed and repeated, as another three-and-out was forced by the defense. The Vikings offense went just three plays, and Waring threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Schultz.
In the fourth quarter, the game was stalling out. A couple of punts in the quarter occurred before the Vikings received another interception. This one from Tucker Dickerber on a 4th down play.
Grand View allowed their only touchdown of the game a drive later, making the score 41-9. That's where the game would end, as the Vikings take the Rock & Ladder Trophy back to Des Moines.
