OSKALOOSA, IOWA – Grand View had their second battle against William Penn this weekend, but away from home this go around. The Vikings were pushed to extra points in two of the three sets but came away with a sweep.
Grand View dominated set one after a slow start. GV went down 3-8 but kills from Kaylee Stalder and Ellie Dougherty gave GV some momentum. Vitoria Campos Mello took over behind the line as well, having four aces in this run by the Vikings.
Jocelyn Barrett heated up midway through the set as she found two attacks and a block. Juliana Neves continued to show her value as setter and input a service ace late into the set. Grand View finished the set with kills from Campos Mello and Stalder, and a 25-13 win.
The following sets were more back and forth. Set two went to the Vikings, 29-27 and then 27-25. Set two, Grand View got in a hole, 11-19. The Vikings timeout gave them the re-group they needed. GV cut the lead to 17-20 before a Statesmen timeout. The Vikings Stalder, Dougherty, and Brooklyn Roder sparked the run along with Clarissa Hasty serving well and gained an ace.
GV took the lead 24-23 for the first time in the set. Campos Mellow delivered late kills. Barrett and Dougherty combined for a block that gave them a 27-26 advantage. Grand View finally gained the two-point advantage to end the set at 29-27 in a stunning comeback set.
The third set, GV had the lead most of the way. Kaylee Stalder continued to shine and finished three attacks early. Campos Mello kept her great impact up as well, delivering kills and playing outstanding defense. The team was up 12-7 before a WPU timeout. Things got tied at 16 but Grand View pushed up the lead again on kills from Campos Mello, Dougherty, and Barrett. Campos Mello took over with the final three kills for Grand View and a WPU error ended the set 27-25 and 3-0 on the match.
