Two Down, Two To Go At NWCA Duals

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – Your top seeded Grand View Vikings took the mat Friday to compete in the 2025 NWCA dual tournament. The Vikings dropped just two matches on the day, defeating Morningside in round one with a 52-0 shutout, and winning eight of the 10 bouts in round two versus No. 9 Southern Oregon, with an end dual score of 42-9.  

GV will wrestle No. 3 ranked Southeastern (Fla.) this Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. on mat 7, January 11th.  Action can be streamed here ($). 
 
NO. 1 GRAND VIEW VERSUS MORNINGSIDE 

The Vikings were off to a dominant start courtesy of No. 1 Aden Reeves giving us a takedown clinic at 125 pounds. He secured a 21-6 tech fall. Korey Mendoza worked his power half onto a 19-4 tech fall at 133 pounds. Tony Mendoza was next, at 141 pounds and copy/pasted Reeves' performance with a dominant showing on his feet and a 21-6 win. No. 7 ranked Elijah Larsen kept the TF streak going with a 20-3 win. Alex Ramirez put on the GV singlet at 157 pounds and gained a 15-4 major decision. Dylan Whitt got our first fall of the tournament at 165, with a feet-to-back takedown. Justin McCunn started his match at 174 pounds with a beautiful pinch headlock, onto a 19-3 TF. A big double leg lift from No. 8 Braden Anderson led to his 20-4 tech fall at 184. No. 1 ranked Garavous Kouekabakilaho had a big double of his own which led to a 6-point fall. Cole Mair ended the dual for the Vikings at heavyweight, and didn't waste any breath. Mair received a pin just 1:39 into the first and secured the 52-0 dual win.

NO. 1 GRAND VIEW VERSUS NO. 9 SOUTHERN OREGON  

Grand View punched their ticket to the semifinal with a relentless effort against Southern Oregon. No. 3 Gabe Gonzales came out for the Vikings on a mission. Gonzales pace was too much for his opponent and earned 6 points for the team score when he forced his opponent into stalling disqualification. No. 3 Jackson Cockrell put points up at 133 pounds with a 20-4 victory. No. 2 Carson Taylor wrestled tough in his first match of the event, controlling all seven minutes. CT received a 6-1 decision at 141 pounds. Next up was the Heard brothers making quick work! No. 3 Darnai Heard gets the fall 1:54 into the first period and E'lan Heard beat that mark with a pin of his own at 1:39 into the first. No. 4 Cam Robinson completed a shutout at 165 pounds with an 18-0 tech fall and a great performance from the top position. No. 1 Alex Reynolds continued scoring points with an 18-2 tech fall in the 174 bout. After efforts from Jameel Coles and Trayvonne Jackson, the day ended with No. 1 ranked Greg Hagan at 285. Hagan earned his win with an early fall in round one. The Vikings took down the Raiders 42-9.
