RENO, NEVADA Grand View University men's wrestling team traveled out west this past weekend, to the Biggest Little City. The Reno Tournament of Champions brought together schools from around the country to compete. Your Vikings made that place their home, taking home Grand View's first ever Reno TOC team title.
Grand View brought 24 wrestlers to strap it up on Sunday. Although an abundance of great performances throughout the tournament, three champs led the way for the Vikings. Aden Reeves at 125 pounds took down four straight division one wrestlers , earning him a perfect tournament. Reeves started the event with a tech fall over Hunter Taylor of Oregon State, followed by back-to-back decisions over Utah Valley's Talen Eck and Yusief Lillie. Reeves finished the tournament against Mack Mauger of Missouri. The finals match was dominated by the Viking, securing a 15-4 major decision and becoming the second individual champion in program history.
Following along was Cam Robinson at 165 pounds. Cam dominated the competition from start to finish, going 5-0 on the day. Robinson teched Jaden Lopez of Big Bend CC to start the tournament and kept his run going with another tech fall over Oregon States Sergio Montoya, reared by yet another tech fall in round three over Brett McIntosh of Wyoming. Following this surge, Robinson took on Kekana Fouret of Oregon State and received a 14-3 major decision. Spoiler alert, this was his closest match of the tournament! Robinson went on to win 18-2 over California Baptist wrestler, Daniel Manibog, in the finals.
To round off the Vikings and the entire tournament was 285-pound Greg Hagan. Hagan made quick work of Clackamas wrestler Marshal Rodenbeck with a pin in the first period. Hagan keeps his momentum with a major decision over Cole Jackson of Cal Poly, 9-1. In round three, Hagan found another fall in period one, over Bryson Harrington of Pittsburgh. The semifinals found the most fits being had for Hagan, as he wrestled Dmarian Lopez of Western Wyoming College. Hagan won this back-and-forth battle in a close 1-0 decision to advance into the finals. To end the night, Hagan took on Embry-Riddle's Kenneth Copley. Bonus points were awarded in the finals as Hagan earned a 13-4 victory to secure GV's 4th individual champion, and the Vikings first Reno Tournament of Champions team victory.
So many notable wrestlers for the Vikings this weekend, as they needed the whole team wrestling well to earn gold in Reno. Congratulations to the men's team and a Merry Christmas to all.
