RENO, NEVADA - Grand View wrestler
Blake Gonzalez took home an individual title from the Reno Tournament of Champions at 149 pounds, defeating two ranked wrestlers in the semifinals and finals while on his way to claiming. The Vikings finished in third overall as a team with a score of 130.5.
The 18th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners tallied 174.5 points in the 21-team tournament. Wyoming placed second with 150 points, while
Grand View finished third with 130.5 points. Utah Valley took fourth with 76 points, and No. 9 Oklahoma State rounded out the top five with 65.5 points.
Altogether, Grand View had one champ, one runner-up, and five who placed in the top six of their respective bracket. The No. 1 Vikings tallied an overall record of 63-38 on Sunday in individual matches throughout the tournament.
Blake Gonzalez, the Broken Arrow native, made history for the Vikings, becoming the first ever to claim a title at the prominent tournament from the NAIA.
The senior collected three tech-fall wins in the early matches of his bracket; in the quarterfinals, Gonzalez continued his dominance by recording a fall over Kobe Olson from Eastern Oregon. To highlight an impressive run by the 149-pounder, he defeated 23rd-ranked Gabe Willochell from Wyoming University to set himself up for a challenging match-up in the finals versus 19th-ranked Sooner Willie McDougald. Blake would claim his title outright by going for a decision win over McDougald, 4-2, claiming a well-deserved first placing. Gonzalez finished a collective 6-0 on the weekend with some hardware.
Isaiah Luellen picked up his runner-up placing after recording 3-straight major decision wins over a wrestler from Corban, an unattached wrestler, and a foe from Wyoming. In the finals, Luellen would fall in a late decision to 30th-ranked (Open Mat) wrestler from Utah Valley, Jacob Armstrong, 8-3.
Top-ranked wrestlers
Carson Taylor and
Greg Hagan finished in third place for the Vikings. In the semifinals, Taylor fell to Iowa State Cyclone commit and current Valiant Prep wrestler Adrian Meza. Hagan missed the finals after a late decision win from 10th-ranked Oklahoma heavyweight Josh Heindselman, 2-1.
Owen Braungardt collected a fourth-place finish, and
Alex Reynolds and
Jack Ervien finished sixth for the Vikings.
The Vikings will prepare for the NWCA Duals, which have returned to Iowa. The Team will gear up for the duals, looking to grab their 12th straight on January 5-6th in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
