Des Moines, IA -Â The Vikings took off their costumes to square off against rival William Penn in the final regular season match of the season. After a tight first set the Vikings were able to take control and hand the Statesmen a loss in 4 sets with scores of 26-24, 15-25, 25-17, 25-12.Â
OF NOTE:Â
The first set started out all William Penn as they quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Vikings stormed back and tied the game at 5 thanks to three aces from
Peyton Cook. The teams would trade short runs before the Vikings extended their lead to 4 and forced the Statesmen to take a timeout down 13-9.
Heleine Filipe come out of the timeout and quickly added on a kill to keep the momentum rolling for the Vikings. Anytime the Vikings would start to open up a gap the Statesmen stayed close and eventually tied it up at 23 when Grand View took a timeout to regroup. Coach
Devon Wells would draw up a perfect plan of attack as the Vikings would come out of the timeout and score 3 of the last 4 points to take set number 1, 26-24.Â
The second set started just like the first set ended as both teams traded points early on. But as the set progressed the Vikings were the victim of several errors that allowed the Statesmen to start to pull away with the set before eventually taking it with a score of 25-15. But as the third set started the Vikings flipped the script,
Brooklyn Roder would pick up a pair of early kills to give the Vikings control of the set. The Statesmen would try and hold on but
Sydney Beasley would seal the deal as she picked up a kill to end the set with a score of 25-17.Â
Set number 4 was all Vikings as they jumped out to a 9-4 lead quickly forcing a William Penn timeout. The timeout wouldn't slow down the Vikings as they quickly extended their lead to 20-10 and forced another Statesmen timeout. The Vikings would capitalize on a few more Statesmen errors before
Ellie Dougherty would end the game with her kill assisted by
