Des Moines, IA - The Vikings surge back from a slow start to pick up their 6th conference win of the season. With scores of 23-35, 17-25, 25-18, 25-23, & 15-12 the Vikings were able to send the Graceland Yellow jackets back to Lamoni with a loss.
How It Happened: Heleine Filipe led the entire match with 19 total kills, with teammates
Brooklyn Roder and
Kylie Hoben following suit with 9 and 6 kills respectfully. On the defensive side of the ball Hoben was a force in the middle as she collected 6 total blocks with help from
Sydney Beasley and Filipe who both added on 3 blocks.
Chevy Wagner-Chun also played a major role on the defensive side of the ball as she was the anchor with 16 digs.
While the first set was tightly contested eventually ending in a 25-23 Yellow Jacket victory, they were able to more securely take the second set of the match with a 25-17 win. The Vikings would not go down without a fight as they were preparing to rally back from an 0-2 start. Graceland would jump out to a quick 9-5 lead before rallying back and eventually taking the lead after a massive Beasley Kill. This helped spark a run that would see the Vikings take a 19-14 lead before the Yellow Jackets took a timeout. Graceland wouldn't be able to find any traction after the timeout and the Vikings found new life as they took set 3, 25-18.
The 4th set would start out with the Vikings under control before the Yellow Jackets would put in a surge to find themselves in the lead 12-9. The Vikings would climb back into the match before a Filipe kill would tie things up at 13 a piece and force a Graceland timeout. Both teams would trade points until GV found themselves down 21-19 and took a timeout to regroup. Coach Wells would get the Vikings under control in the huddle and help them prepare for one last push that would see them score 6 out of the last 8 points of the set. A
Sierra Wright and Beasley block would seal the deal with a score of 25-23.
In the decisive set 5 the Vikings took control early and jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets would fight back but would never take the lead in the 5th set as the Vikings were lifted up by 6 kills from Filipe. And to seal the deal Wright collected an ace to complete the reverse sweep for the Vikings, 15-12.
