Vikings Score 45 Unanswered Points to Defeat Peru State on Senior Day

DES MOINES, IOWA – No. 2 Viking Football took down Peru State College, 45-0 on Saturday afternoon to snap the Bobcat four-game win streak. With the victory, the Vikings closed out regular season play at the Duke undefeated for another season. 

Junior quarterback Jackson Waring completed 16-of-23 passes for a total of 325 passing yards and two touchdowns, connecting with three different offensive personnel, including running back Avery Gates, Tight end Nate Willcockson, and wide receiver Tyrell Newman

Avery Gates was the leading receiver for the Vikings, with much credit due to the 82-yard first-quarter bomb from Waring. Gates finished with 110 yards on five receptions with one touchdown. 

Senior Tyler Vitzthum led the rush game for the second-ranked Vikings. Vitzthum went for 75 yards, and two touchdowns. 

Multiple Vikings would record an impressive stat line on the defensive side in efforts of a shutout. Linebacker John Argo would have a career-high 11 tackles. Jaylen Perkins would follow behind Argo with seven tackles and two pass breakups. Senior Tristin Waugh would record his 10th sack of the season and finished with two TFLs' for 14 total yards. Kiaeem Mosley would also record 2.5 TFL of his own. 

The Vikings finished with over double the amount of total offense compared to the Bobcats. The Vikings had 470 total yards on 58 plays, the Bobcats finished with 226 yards on 67 plays. 

KEY STATISTICS

  • The Vikings would strike later than usual in the first quarter with less than five minutes left to play on a 22-yard field goal from Nathan Hamilton.  
  • The Bobcats would attempt a 42-yard field goal to start the second quarter but came up empty-handed.
  • Waring and Co. would march down the field, finding Damon Street for the 40-yard pick-up that would later result in a 24-yard rushing touchdown for Gates and adding to the Viking lead 10-0. 
  • The Viking offense would come alive in the second quarter; Waring would hit Nate Willcockson with a 40-yard touchdown pass to go up 17 to nothing. The drive would consist of four total plays for 58 yards. 
  • Following the Viking's second touchdown, the defense would hold firm for a three-and-out, resulting in Kiaeem Mosley and Aaron Brown tallying the TFL. 
  • Tyrell Newman would record a touchdown to continue to pace the Viking offense, burning up 2:33 of the clock. 
  • Tyler Vitzthum would record a career-high two touchdowns in a game, all in the second half of play. 
  • The Vikings currently rank 1st in the NAIA in scoring and second in PPG with 46.1. 
  • Grand View would open up the fourth quarter with a rushing touchdown from Vitzthum that would finish things for the Vikings, 45-0. 
  • Hamilton was 6-6 on PATs, and had two touchbacks.

The Vikings will finish their regular season on the road, with their first stop being next Saturday, November 4th, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The Vikings will take on the Statesmen (4-4, Conf 2-1) at 1:00 p.m.
