Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Vikings Get the Sweep for a Cause on Dig Pink Night

Des Moines, IA- The Vikings opened a Tuesday night contest against the Pride in honor of breast cancer awareness and late Viking head women's volleyball coach LeAnn Stefani. The Vikings would execute the sweep for a cause over the Clarke University Pride with set scores of 26-24, 25-18, and 25-16.

How It Happened-
Brooklyn Roder would be the only Viking to reach double-digit kills, finishing with 11. Vanessa Romo would follow behind her with eight kills of her own on just twelve attempts. Jenna Bentz would amount to 29 assists on the Vikings' 35 kills. Chevy Wagner-Chun would be the Vikings' anchor defensively as she would be there for 12 digs, and Wagner-Chun would also have a hot night from the service stripe as she saw seven aces, four being straight.

In the first set, the Vikings would jump to an early lead, not leaving much time for Clarke to regain power. The Vikings would get a 17-13 lead off of a kill from Jenna Bentz and a block from Romo and Kylie Hoben. The Pride would answer with two straight points of their own, and the team would pull themselves within one point until the Vikings had an answer from Brooklyn Roder for the set to end in the Vikings' favor, 26-24.

The second set would be neck and neck a majority of the way. Although things were tight early on, the Vikings' would not trail again in the second set after they regained a 4-3 lead in the early goings, fueled by four straight service aces from Chevy Wagner-Chun. A trio of Viking kills, and a block from Romo and Hoben would give the Vikings a 13-9 lead. A late timeout from the Pride wouldn't be enough to force the set to extras, as Ellie Dougherty tucked one away to take the set 25-18.

Like the second set, the Vikings and Pride would set out pretty even. However, the Vikings would hold the Pride empty-handed in 8-straight serves as they took the lead 10-4. The Vikings would again come out on fire following a Pride timeout, and the team would hold the Pride scoreless for another 4-straight serves. Clarissa Hasty would mark two consecutive aces to further the team's lead, 13-5. A trio of aces from Wagner-Chun would put the Vikings to match point, leading Clarke 24-13, and Kylie Hoben would finish the game with a kill, 25-16.

OF NOTE
  • Vikings collected 51 total points to the Pride's 37.
  • Grand View had a season-high 11 aces, seven being from Wagner-Chun.
  • Kylie Hoben would finish with five total blocks.
The Vikings are back in action on Tuesday Night as they take on Clarke University starting at 7PM.
